The design of the Air Max 1000 draws inspiration from the original Air Max 1, which launched in 1987 as Nike’s inaugural shoe featuring a visible air cushion in the heel. While this signature air cushion remains a key element of the new model, it is the only part not created via 3D printing; the rest of the shoe is crafted from a single flexible material that varies in density and texture. This allows for a supportive outsole while providing flexibility and comfort in the upper section, enabling a laceless design that facilitates easy wear.
The advanced manufacturing techniques employed in creating the Air Max 1000 enable intricate contours and designs that traditional shoe-making methods cannot achieve. John Hoke, Nike’s Chief Innovation Officer, expressed his enthusiasm for these new manufacturing possibilities, stating that they allow for innovative solutions previously deemed impossible.
Initially launched in a vibrant red colorway, additional color options such as orange, white, blue, and black with a green air cushion were later revealed at the event. Although Nike offered a limited number of pairs at ComplexCon through a lottery system—totaling just 1,000 pairs—there are no current plans for a wider release or pricing details. For context, similar 3D-printed footwear from Zellerfeld ranges from approximately $159 to nearly $400.
The Air Max 1000 is part of Nike’s ongoing exploration of 3D printing technology in footwear design. Previously, in 2017, Nike introduced the VaporFly Elite Flyprint, featuring a 3D-printed upper designed to enhance athletic performance. Other brands like Adidas are also venturing into fully 3D-printed shoes, showcasing a growing trend within the industry to innovate footwear manufacturing through advanced technologies.
